How can you choose the right toilet training pants?

The right toilet training pants are very important when you’re potty training your child. Unfortunately, some parents get confused between toilet training pants and diapers – a diaper is something you want your child to stop wearing, while a toilet training pant is something that will make the potty training process more successful.

Toilet training pants can be used as diapers, but they are different from diapers in that they allow for less frequent leaks. That’s why these pants may not be ideal for using every day, when your child is still not very toilet trained. So it’s important that you start to teach your child to use the toilet at the same time as using potty training pants.

Here are the different things you should keep in mind when choosing the underwear:

1. What kind of underwear is it?

There are many kinds of potty training underwear for toddlers out there on the market – disposable, pull-up, cloth, cotton, etc. What are the main differences?
Disposable pants are very easy to use, so your child won’t find it difficult to pull them down whenever he or she needs to go to the loo. However, some children can be allergic to the material used. So make sure you use disposables that suitable for children with sensitive skin.
Cloth or cotton training pants may be another option for you. Cloth training pants are more affordable and environment-friendly. However, they will take some time for washing and drying. In addition, clothing pants will allow your child to feel wet. Some experts say this is beneficial for toilet training your child. However, make sure to buy cloth that’s from a natural fabric like cotton, so that your child doesn’t have any reactions to the wetness.
Yet another option is to start off with disposable pants, and then switch to cloth pants once your child starts to have fewer “accidents”.

2. Is it comfortable?

The underwear should fir snugly, and your child should feel comfortable to walk around wearing it. If the underwear is too big, your child will have accidents. If it’s too small, then your child will have a hard time taking the pants off, so there will be more accidents again.

3. Is it environmentally friendly?

This may or may not be a big concern for you, but if it is, you should opt for cloth or cotton pants. In addition, many companies offer organic cotton pants, which are said to be more suitable for children with sensitive skin.

4. Is it an appealing design?

Children like visual stimulation, so your child will prefer underwear that looks appealing to them. Try to buy underwear in their favourite colors, or with their favourite cartoon characters printed on top. If he or she sees pants that they like, they are more likely to be enthusiastic about the toilet training process.

Ultimately, the decision lies in what your child prefers. Try to understand his or her needs better, and involve him in the process.
